I found a cool lesson plan where the teacher would start out
with a math story to read aloud to the students and modeling a read aloud to
show the students to pay attention to the mathematical vocabulary in the story and
draw pictures from the reading. After the reading, the teacher helps the
students write an equation to represent what happened in the story. Once they
complete this, they write their own math story. I would use this in my classroom
and give students guidelines like including a certain number of mathematical
terms. It gives the students a chance to be creative but also allows them to
show their understanding of the concepts.

That is such a cool lesson plan. It ties so much literacy into math and that is very difficult to do and find examples of. I really like how it discusses the concept of the teacher modeling the process and then a group of students repeating the same process. I find it interesting though how this particular lesson plan uses both text that the students must read and then the students making a sequence of drawings to represent the math story. That is good use of multi-modal literacy!
